In lieu of knitting...

Since I'm still busy with Christmas projects X, Y and Z.  (Wait those don't look at all mysterious...)  How about "Christmas projects X, Y and Z"?   I've always thought italics look oh so much more alluring.    Anyhoo...since I'm knitting projects that can not yet be mentioned, here's some spinning I've been working on...

As it is early December in western NY and the sun is no where to be seen, I decided to treat myself to some color. This delightful pile of fluff is my favorite roving from my stash. It's called Starry Night  and is a 50/50 mohair/wool mix from Tintagel Farms.  I bought it at the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival after walking by the booth about 50 times trying to ignore its siren's song.  Needless to say I fell for it.  I think I will be making a drop stitch scarf from the Summer 2008 Interweave Spin-Off mag.....for me.  (Serious extra points for anyone who can name the two beings that combined to make the mythical Greek siren....)

The purple mohair/wool mix has been plied by....

Megan, my DD1! (Dear Daughter #1.  I thought about going with an abbreviation for Oldest Dear Daughter but that would just be odd.   Those are her beautiful, graceful hands doing the plying.  I can't believe how fast she learned to use the wheel...I also can't believe how pleased it makes me to see her using my wheel!

And last but not least, I'm trying to do some very fine, high WPI (that's wraps per inch) singles on my spindle.  The fiber is a 50/50 merino/tencel blend from Susan's spinning Bunny in their Roses for You colorway.  It is extremely soft and light and actually quite a challenge to handle in my heated dry house.  When any of the fibers break away from the pack, they float in the air until some subtle static charge pulls them on to clothes, hair, furniture or dog where they stick like velcro.

Here's an artsy shot of my spindle...

It's a Golding spindle  made from purpleheart in their tsunami pattern.  The Goldings had a booth at both the Finger Lakes Fiber Fest and at Rhinebeck and their wood working craftsmanship is jaw dropping.

Spell Checker Update:  OK, Mr. Spell Checker had some interesting suggestions for today's post.  Not surprisingly, "Tintagel Farm" wasn't in its dictionary so it suggested "Tentacle Farm" ...not sure what they would sell.  And instead of spinning a "merino/tencel" mix, it would prefer that I use a "merino/tonsil" mix...ewww.  And the "Goldings" may be surprised to find that they are now "Geldings".  (See original posting "Fun With Mr. Spell Checker".)

PS:  I would like to apologize for my over use of ellipses today....  don't know what's up with that..... I have a cold ..... maybe it's just too much to complete a thought....  someone pass me a tissue.... <sniff>

The sirens were both bird and woman, but different sources have different ideas of which parts were which - parts is parts, after all.

The Starry Night yarn looks wonderful and so well plied, too!

You get triple ultra double points for knowing your Greek mythology! Of course, makes you wonder what was up with the sailors being tempted by a half bird creature which ever half it was. Same thing with sailors thinking manatees were mermaids -- loooooong time at sea I guess.
